Bayer Leverkusen have been working for a long time to tie Florian Wirtz down to a new contract beyond 2027.

However, while negotiations between the parties on a contract until 2028 are at an advanced stage, an agreement has yet to be reached due to ongoing discussions over a release clause that the player and his management want included in the deal, according to Sport Bild.

While the inclusion of a release clause is not in itself a problem for Leverkusen, the parties are still quite far apart on the size of it.

Wirtz and his management would like to see the clause set at around €100 million, but Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro insisted in the past that he would not let the 21-year-old leave for less than €150 million.

In the end, it's likely that the parties will settle for around €125 million and agree that the clause cannot be activated before the summer of 2026, the report claims.

Wirtz has racked up 14 goals and 11 assists in 30 games in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen this season.
