Hamburger SV fought back to win a point away from home with a 1-1 draw against Mainz 05. Fabio Vieira’s deflected free-kick earned the newly-promoted side a point as they’re now five games unbeaten in the Bundesliga.

“Thanks to Mainz and the referee for agreeing on delaying the game due to difficulties in arriving at the stadium,” Merlin Polzin started his post-match interview with gratitude as the game was pushed for ten minutes from the usual kickoff time.

“It was a game that was a lot about duels and hardship,” HSV’s coach referred to the relegation six-pointer. “It was a heavy fight as expected. In the first half, we had chances. If you have opportunities against Mainz’s good defense, you have to use them. Instead, we were punished with the goal before half-time.

“During the break, we discussed sticking to our plan. The boys did that. In general, our team's performance was very stable. We are all the happier that we were able to take the point.”

Hamburg will now have back-to-back home games against Champions League hopefuls RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen. Although they couldn’t win three successive games for the first time, they’re now unbeaten since losing to Freiburg in their first game of 2026.
