Nico Schlotterbeck laid bare his ambitions for Dortmund following their win against Heidenheim last weekend.

He asserted his belief in challenging Bayern for the title, a task that seemed almost impossible two weeks earlier. The gap has closed from 11 points to just six, with Bayern still yet to travel to Dortmund for der Klassiker at the end of February.

Speaking to DAZN, the centre-back said: “As BVB, we need to start telling the fans we want to be champions. The lads and I want to go for it. Bayern play (third-placed) Hoffenheim next week.” He continued, “Of course, we need to keep picking up points, but we're trying to be right there in the mix. And Bayern are coming to us.”

Schlotterbeck’s ambition was not shared by the Borussia Dortmund hierarchy, and have reportedly stirred internal tension. Both sporting director Sebastian Kehl and head coach Niko Kovac quickly moved to ease expectations.

A gut feeling that could prove costly

Following Dortmund’s 3-0 win away to Union Berlin, Schlotterbeck commented on the uncertainty he faces in remaining at Dortmund: “I’ve set a personal deadline, which I won’t reveal. When I make the decision… well, it’s a gut feeling. I don’t know yet how it will turn out.” He continued: “I’ve always said I feel comfortable here. But it’s a difficult situation, and I don’t want to put unnecessary pressure on myself.”

Schlotterbeck is currently one of the most highly rated defenders in Europe, with a price tag that could exceed £70 million. Several major European clubs, including Barcelona, have expressed interest in the 26-year-old. Contract negotiations have reportedly included discussions about Schlotterbeck becoming the face of the club. His comments following the Heidenheim game seem to be a carefully calculated move to test Dortmund’s own ambition.

The defender has no lack of suitors that would gladly pay a high price for his services. It’s clear that he likes Dortmund and would prefer to remain at the club, but without the prospect of winning titles, leaving becomes his only option.

Borussia Dortmund is one of Europe’s highest-earning clubs. Since joining, Schlotterbeck has seen the team lose out on a German title on goal difference, and reach the 2024 Champions League final. However, the bosses at BVB have grown complacent with not winning titles; seemingly satisfied with Champions League qualification, flowing revenue and the title of eternally second.

Some fans have long felt that Dortmund's inability in winning silver is down to a lack of ambition from the club's management.

With Schlotterbeck’s future hanging in the balance, his challenge to Bayern for the title is also a challenge to his bosses: to show the same level of ambition in winning as him.

If management refuses to demonstrate a clear ambition in mounting a title challenge, Schlotterbeck’s gut feeling could prove costly for the club, leaving them with the tough task of replacing their cornerstone defender.
