Leverkusen actively search for Boniface placeholder

By Peter Weis   @PeterVicey

Though all German footballing media sources presently appraise the likelihood of a deal as unlikely, confirmation that Bayer 04 Leverkusen have opened up negotiations over a potential loan for Spanish striker Borja Iglesias Quintas at least show that die Werkself are interested in picking up another striker in the current January transfer window.

Rumors surfacing in Spanish news sources concerning a potential play by league-leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen for Spanish striker Borja Iglesias Quintas are now being confirmed by virtually all German footballing media outlets. Most German football experts - among them Stephan van Nocks of Germany's Kicker Magazine - nevertheless emphasize that a deal remains unlikely. Many factors speak against a transfer.

Leverkusen - in an effort to compensate for the absence of the injured Victor Boniface - are looking to acquire a striker on loan only on a short term basis. Iglesias' Spanish club Real Betis, meanwhile, wish to sell the 31-year-old outright. The two sides are far apart. Van Nocks points out the player himself may be disinterred in joining a German club at which he will serve as the #3 striker once Boniface returns.

German footballing media outlets report that Leverkusen have only made initial contact with the Andalusian club and that no formal offer has been tendered. Confirmation that, at the very least, Simon Rolfes and the Bayer administrative team are looking does suggest that - rather than only carry Patrik Schick as the lone classic target forward on their roster for the next two months - die Werkself hope to pick up another center-forward.
