Felix Klaus was the hero once again for Greuther Fürth as the Green and Whites took three points at the expense of newly-promoted Energie Cottbus. The winger already reached five goals for the season, despite his penalty-kick miss proved decisive in the derby defeat against Nürnberg.
The 33-year-old scored from the spot here in first-half injury-time to cancel Lucas Copaldo’s opening goal. It was Cottbus’ turn to equalize after the restart when half-time substitute and club captain Tolcay Ciğerci scored his third goal of the season.
Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ole Pohlmann restored Fürth’s lead before Klaus completed his second brace of the season ten minutes before time. Klaus was also pivotal when Fürth took the lead for the first time early in the second-half with Fousseny Doumbia’s own-goal.
Both sides were knocked out of the cup last week, but Fürth will now hope to keep their momentum after their first win of the season. Cottbus conceded three or more goals in their last two 2. Bundesliga encounters.
