Freiburg vs. Eintracht Frankfurt preview: Two sides battling for European football

Eintracht Frankfurt have failed to recover since the loss to Köln and are winless since then heading into Sunday's away clash. However, Freiburg have only managed one Bundesliga win in 2024 and sit in eighth.

Freiburg

Freiburg head into this game off a heavy 3-0 defeat away at the Westfalenstadion. Goals from Donyell Malen and Niclas Füllkrug meant Freiburg remained on twenty-eight points.

With only thirty-five percent possession, SC Freiburg struggled throughout the game and could not really get a foothold in the clash.

A bright spark for Freiburg, Vincenzo Grifo has registered twelve goal contributions and has proven that his experience brings an attacking threat for a low-scoring Freiburg side.

In midweek, it was announced that Christian Streich's assistant coach Patrick Beier will leave Freiburg at the end of the season following twenty-five years at the club.

Following defeat to Borussia Dortmund, coach Christian Streich said: "We were in the game in the first half, but there were a few situations where we crossed the ball dangerously without a finish."

Team news

For Freiburg, a long injury list means Matthias Ginter is out with an achilles injury, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh is unavailable due to a knee problem and Kenneth Schmidt is out with an abdominal issue.

Adding to this, Merlin Röhl is still suspended due to a red card he got against Stuttgart and Philipp Lienhart is also out with a groin injury. Lastly, Junior Adamu is unavailable with a muscular injury.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt drew last weekend against Bochum but would have hoped for much more as they controlled large periods of the game.

At twenty-five-years-old, Omar Marmoush has had a breakout season for Eintracht Frankfurt and has managed eleven goal contributions this season being "die Adler's" top scorer.

Defensively solid, Eintracht Frankfurt have only conceded twenty-five goals this Bundesliga campaign (third-least amount in the league).

As well as this, Eintracht Frankfurt are unbeaten in five of their last six trips to the Europa-Park Stadion (Freiburg's stadium).

Ahead of the game, Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller said: "Freiburg are having a solid season, doing good work and are heading in the direction of European qualification."
Team news
