Yesterday, Mesut Özil posted a statement on various social media channels in which he revealed that he will no longer play for the German national team following the events of the last few months.

Özil, who has been under heavy fire since he was pictured with controversial Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the World Cup, feels he has been branded a 'scapegoat' far too often and that his commitment to Germany has been questioned due to his Turkish heritage.

However, Bayern München president Uli Hoeness says that he is happy about Özil's farewell to the national team as he feels the 29-year-old hasn't performed well for several years.

"I'm glad this scare is over. He has been crap for years. He won his last tackle before the World Cup in 2014. And now he hides himself and his crap performances behind this photo," Hoeness told various German media outlets and added:

"His 35 million follower boys, who don't exist in the real world, feel he has been playing excellently when he completes a cross pass."

Özil made his German international debut in 2009. He went on to make 92 appearances for 'Die Mannschaft' and scored 23 goals.
