Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff has praised Stefan Kuntz amid reports that the 58-year-old is a candidate to succeed Joachim Löw as head coach this summer.

Kuntz was appointed Germany U21 coach in 2016 and has since had his deal extended until 2023.

With the German Football Association still probing the market, time will tell if he will be released from that contract to take charge of the seniors this summer.

"The fact that we have extended his contract shows our appreciation for him. I've known him for a long time. When I was 18, we went to training at Bayer Uerdingen together. He is held in very high regard by the German Football Association," Bierhoff told reporters at a press conference on Monday before underlining:

"We have good internal options, but will continue to keep an eye on the market. We are right to take our time."

Löw's current assistant coach, Marcus Sorg, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
