Referee admits sending off Karazor was a mistake

Referee Sven Jablonski has admitted that Stuttgart's Atakan Karazor shouldn't have been sent off against Wolfsburg.

VfB Stuttgart were reduced to 10 men after 63 minutes of Saturday's 2-2 draw with VfL Wolfsburg when Atakan Karazor was shown a second yellow card.

Video replays, however, showed that it was Karazor and not Wolfsburg's Maximilian Arnold who was fouled.

After watching the replay after the game, referee Sven Jablonski admitted that he had made the wrong decision in sending Karazor off.

"I saw a foul on Arnold, the player also held his ankle and said he felt a sting," Jablonski told Sky.

“I've now seen the pictures and I have to say that it was Arnold who hit his opponent. So the yellow card was wrong, which really annoys me.”

The video assistant referee can only review a replay after a straight red card has been shown, not when a player is sent off for a second yellow card. Jablonski believes that today's situation shows that the rules should be changed.

"I would like us to be able to go to the screen and check the scene when a yellow-red card is shown," said Jablonski.

“Then I would have realized it very quickly.”
