Rudi Völler is confident that Manuel Neuer will be fully fit for Germany’s World Cup opener against Curaçao on Sunday.
The 40-year-old has missed both of Germany’s two World Cup warm-up friendlies due to calf problems, but head coach Julian Nagelsmann made it clear on Saturday that the plan is for the veteran goalkeeper to start against Curaçao.
Völler, the German Football Association’s sporting director, also has no doubt that Neuer will be fully ready on Sunday, despite not having built up any match practice beforehand.
“He has already completed training sessions with the team here in Chicago and shown that his calf is no longer causing major problems,” Völler told Bild.
“We are talking about Manuel Neuer! He is a world-class goalkeeper who has experienced everything in his career and has more than enough experience,” he added.
“He will have a superb tournament, I am convinced of that. In addition, he knows many of the players on the pitch from Bayern Munich. We don’t need to worry about Manuel at all.”
