Bremen look to cash in on their captain

Werder Bremen are looking to offload Marco Friedl before he enters the last year of his contract.

The former Bayern Munich player Marco Friedl is among the defenders set to leave this summer from Werder Bremen. The Green and Whites already confirmed the summer departures of Milos Veljkovic and Anthony Jung.

A similar feat could be drawn from the future of Friedl since his current contract only runs until 2026. The 27-year-old joined Weserstadion back in 2018, in an initial loan deal from the record champions.

In an interview with Bild, licensing manager Peter Niemeyer confirmed the possibility of separating from their captain. “We are in talks about whether we can continue with Marco (Friedl) beyond the end of his contract,” said the former Hertha Berlin midfielder. “We don't want to enter the final year of our captain's contract without an extension. So we need clarity in the summer.

“We want to further develop the team, and move the club forward. We will do everything we can to achieve this. In the end, we’ll find good solutions together.”

Bremen succumbed to another home defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach after ending their bad run of results last week in BayArena. After missing six weeks due to suspension and injury, Friedl returns to action as a late substitute.
