Jonas Hofmann: "This defeat hurts"

Jonas Hofmann voiced his disappointment after Gladbach's loss to Mainz.
Borussia Mönchengladbach fell to their first defeat this season on Sunday, losing 0-1 at home against Mainz in a game that saw Ko Itakura sent off in the second half.

In a post-match interview, Gladbach midfielder Jonas Hofmann shared his thoughts on the game.

"This defeat hurts because we could have prevented it. We didn't do well at the start and didn't get into the game well. We found few solutions tried to hit them on the counter. After 30 minutes, it was better and we created more chances, but we didn't found the equaliser," said Hofmann and added:

"After we had a man sent off, we played even better football than when we had the same number of players as Mainz. There were still a few chances to take something from the game. Overall, it just wasn't meant to be today.

"We tried, fought and gave everything we had to somehow score another goal. The encouraging applause from the fans after the final whistle is nice, of course. It's all the more bitter that we couldn't reward them and ourselves with a point. But we won't let that get us down and we'll keep going. We now have two difficult games against Freiburg and Leipzig ahead of us - we have to be positive again."
