Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Augsburg preview: Visitors targeting third straight win

Adi Hütter has experienced an eventful start to his second stint in charge of die Adler. The 56-year-old oversaw a mammoth 11-0 thrashing of fifth-tier SC St. Tonis in the DFB-Pokal. Hütter’s side looked set to claim another victory in their Bundesliga opener against Union Berlin, with Younes Ebnoutalib netting a hat-trick to put his side 3-1 up with just over 20 minutes to play. To Hütter’s frustration, his team failed to see the job through, conceding twice in the space of 13 minutes as they spurned a winning position.

After being made to settle for a 3-3 draw, Frankfurt will be desperate to take all three points from their first home outing of the new season. Die Adler have won two of their last three meetings with Augsburg at Deutsche Bank Park, forming part of a seven-game unbeaten run in head-to-head home encounters. Ritsu Dōan proved to be Frankfurt’s hero in last season’s home clash, netting the decisive goal in a narrow 1-0 victory. 

Team News

Frankfurt are unable to call upon the injured trio of Jessic Ngankam, Nnamdi Collins and Ansgar Knauff. Meanwhile, in positive news, Dōan is available for selection after recovering from an injury that kept him out the first two games.

Augsburg

Augsburg are looking to enjoy another strong campaign after achieving a top-half finish last term. The Fuggerstädter kicked off the new season with a 2-0 success against second-tier Energie Cottbus in the DFB-Pokal before they ran out 3-0 winners in their Bundesliga opener against Schalke 04. Michael Gregoritsch scored the only goal of the first period before Schalke’s Ron Schallenberg was given his marching orders in the early stages of the second half. Augsburg took the numerical advantage to extend their lead to three with efforts from Anton Kade and Rodrigo Ribeiro. 

The Fuggerstädter will have their work cut out to extend their winning start to the season, having failed to win any of their last five games against Frankfurt since recording a 2-1 home victory in December 2023. That said, three of those five matches have ended all square, including a 1-1 scoreline in April’s meeting at the WWK Arena. Meanwhile, their last away win against Frankfurt came via a 3-1 scoreline in April 2019.

Team News

The visitors are without Steve Mounié and Tim Breithaupt, while Anton Kade is a doubt after withdrawing early from Wednesday’s training session. As for Alexis Claude-Maurice, he has recovered from injury and is set to feature in a matchday squad for the first time this season.
