However, playing under Freiburg coach Christian Streich 'wasn't always easy', the 24-year-old forward admits in an interview with Express.
"The two years I spent in Freiburg were very important for me. I was able to play regularly in the Bundesliga," Waldschmidt said and continued:
"But it wasn't always easy. The coach and I didn't always agree with each other, which is why I was sitting on the bench from time to time. I had to fight my way back into the team again and again because things about me didn't fit him very well. But he dealt with me and gave me the feeling that he wanted to take me further.
"He wanted me to defend better as a striker, but I was rather focusing on attacking. I had to learn and rethink a bit."
Waldschmidt made his senior international debut in October last year and has gone on two score twice in five appearances for Germany.
