Could this be the moment that sparks a turnaround for St. Pauli? That was the question heading into their crucial Bundesliga clash with Mainz 05 at a buzzing Millerntor. The stakes were clear: points were desperately needed to ease relegation concerns.

However, the day began in the worst possible fashion for Alexander Blessin’s side. Just six minutes in, Mainz struck with precision. Kaishu Sano intercepted possession deep in St. Pauli territory and quickly set Sheraldo Becker free. The forward’s delivery into the box found Philipp Tietz, who calmly slotted past Nikola Vasilj to hand the visitors an early lead and silence the home crowd.

Despite the setback, St. Pauli showed glimpses of intent - particularly from set pieces. Corners and free kicks caused Mainz problems on several occasions, suggesting clear work on the training ground. Yet, while the hosts threatened sporadically, they struggled to create sustained pressure from open play.

The pattern of the game soon became evident. Mainz remained compact, organised, and efficient, doing only what was necessary while waiting for opportunities to break. St. Pauli, in contrast, looked eager but lacked cohesion - especially defensively.

That contrast proved decisive again late in the half. In the 40th minute, Mainz executed another swift counterattack down the right flank. Captain Silvan Widmer delivered a precise ball into the area, where Phillipp Mwene arrived to finish clinically and double the lead.

At 2-0 down heading into the interval, St. Pauli faced an uphill battle. Their fight for survival demanded a reaction in the second half - but against a Mainz side playing with control and confidence, the task looked increasingly daunting.

The second half was almost a repitition of the first 45 minutes; the only difference being, that Mainz failed to find the goal for a third time.

Just two minutes in, Nadiem Amiri had the best chance to score, dribbling along the sideline until his shot found the shoulder of Vasilj.

St. Pauli on the other hand should have at least scored one goal - but today was the perfect explaination for the hosts being the lowest scoring Bundesliga side (26 goals - ten less than the next team) this season.

St. Pauli's Abdoulie Ceesay ran towards Daniel Batz, with no defender around him, but instead of shooting, he decided to pass the ball to teammate Martijn Kaars a few metres next to him, with a defender around him, - and he couldn't convert the chance into a goal. The home fans almost had a laugh at that scene!

In the 87th minute, St. Pauli finally found the back of the net: it was a again the subbed in Ceesay, who tried his luck with a rather unplaced shot - but it had enough power to take a deflection from Batz and roll over the goalline. Could this game actually get exciting in the last few minutes?

Kind of - but not really. The home crowd was hoping for a lot, but St. Pauli just struggle too much going forward. It was rather Mainz, who almost scored a third in extra-time. At the end, St. Pauli must hope, that their competitors in the relegation battle stay worse than them - otherwise it could get really uncomfortable for the club from Hamburg in the final two games of the season.

Mainz on the other hand have now officially escaped relegation, even though nobody believed they would go down after Urs Fischer stabalised the team and turned it into one of the best in the second half of the Bundesliga season.

Final result: St. Pauli 1-2 Mainz 05.
