After months of negotiations and speculation, Borussia Dortmund were finally able to announce a long-term contract extension for Nico Schlotterbeck in April.

BVB tied the 26-year-old centre-back down until 2031, although there is a significant but: the deal includes a release clause.

This led to some Dortmund fans booing Schlotterbeck, expressing frustration that the defender has left the door open to a potential departure.

Early reports suggested the clause is set at €50–60 million, applies to a select group of clubs and becomes active as early as this summer.

It has since been claimed by Sky Germany that Liverpool and Real Madrid are among the clubs eligible to trigger the clause, with the third and final club not yet disclosed.

A World Cup audition

With the release clause already active this summer, Schlotterbeck could potentially secure a big-money move if he impresses at the World Cup with Germany.

The BVB defender looks set to start alongside Jonathan Tah in central defence under Julian Nagelsmann, giving him a strong platform to showcase his qualities.

First, however, Schlotterbeck will focus on Borussia Dortmund’s final two matches of the 2025/26 season.

The Black and Yellows host Eintracht Frankfurt this Friday before travelling to Bremen to face Werder on the final matchday next week.

Time will tell if that game will be Schlotterbeck’s last in a Dortmund shirt or whether he will still be part of the squad heading into pre-season for the 2026/27 campaign.
