Mainz 05 sporting director Niko Bungert fears striker Silas may have suffered a broken bone during their 0-0 draw with SK Sigma Olomouc in the Conference League last-16 tonight

“With Silas, we fear he’s got a broken shinbone. That’s very bitter because he’s a really positive guy and someone that has had back luck with injuries in the past,” he said in the mixed zone.

Bungert confessed “it wasn’t a high-quality game” as their opponents from Czechia held them to a scoreless first-leg draw, but drew positives on the experience too.

"We played against a team that, as expected, were tactically well organised and made life difficult for us, especially since we didn’t have our best day.

“We rarely found ways to create dangerous chances and there were also the two very close offside decisions,” the 39-year-old said in the mixed zone afterwards.

“Even so, we’re in a manageable situation going into the next leg and, hopefully in front of a full house, everything is still in our hands. […] Focus moves to the Bremen game at the weekend now,” he added.
