In an interview with Die Welt, German national team sporting director Rudi Völler revealed that he hopes Julian Nagelsmann will stay on as head coach beyond the World Cup in 2026, when his current contract expires.
"We will try to convince Julian that it makes sense for him to stay on as coach for a few more years. We'll see when the time is right. As the DFB, we are of course very happy that we have Julian Nagelsmann," said Völler.
Nagelsmann "can only decide for himself" if he wants to continue after the World Cup, Völler also said in the interview with Die Welt.
"He's a young guy who might have ambitions to do something else."
Nagelsmann responded to Völler's comments at a press conference on Sunday evening, leaving everything open.
"You have a certain conviction when you take the job. We played well at the European Championship and achieved a lot from a footballing point of view. I don't know yet whether we'll be working together beyond 2026," said Nagelsmann.
"I feel very comfortable in this job. I can imagine everything, but there's still a lot of time," he added.
For now, the focus is on the Nations League, then the World Cup qualifiers, then the World Cup - "and then we'll see," Nagelsmann said.
Nagelsmann was appointed Germany coach in September 2023.
