Onyeka leads by example in Germany U19's late win over Greece

Christian Wörns’ side started the game without their two goal scorers, Otto Stange and Montrell Culbreath, from the exciting draw with Sweden. The drub first-half reflected that as they kept making wrong decisions in the final third.

There was much better urgency and precision on their play early after the restart. And Bayer Leverkusen’s emerging star Culbreath joined Germany’s desperate attempt for a winning goal after the hour mark.

However, a plethora of crosses didn’t lead to any meaningful attack. With seven minutes left to play, there was only a single shot on target in what was a largely forgettable game of football.

That was all changed with a well-worked goal in the 84th minute. Luca Erlein’s diagonal pass initiated the attack as Culbreath’s quick feet and Tiago Poller’s decisive one-touch assist sent the captain through in goal.

Francis Onyeka joined Germany U19’s squad despite fitness issues during this international window, but the winning strike continued his excellent record of scoring a goal per game at this level.

Having conceded with the last kick of the game against Sweden, there was a bit of nervousness on display by Germany during injury-time. However, Greece failed to even attempt a shot on target throughout the entire match.

Germany still need to beat Austria on Tuesday in the final group stage game so that they can qualify for this summer’s tournament in Wales. Austria have a better goal difference than Germany following their 3-0 win over Sweden in the earlier game from the group.
