Despite not being at their fluent best, RB Leipzig showed a clinical edge to secure a 2-1 win away at Werder Bremen, marking a successful return for head coach Ole Werner to his former club.

Antonio Nusa fired the visitors ahead after just 15 minutes, but Leipzig were forced to weather sustained pressure for the remainder of the first half, ultimately taking a narrow lead into the break.

The visitors struck again seven minutes into the second half, this time capitalising on a turnover in possession as Rômulo doubled their advantage. A late scare followed when Salim Musah netted a 94th-minute consolation, but Leipzig held firm to claim all three points.

Captain David Raum admitted his side were not at their best, but stressed the importance of grinding out results at this stage of the season:

“You don’t get anything for free at this stage of the season. It wasn’t our best game, but in the end the three points are what count. It was a hard-fought win. In this stadium, in front of these fans, against a team fighting for every point, it’s always a real battle.”

Raum also praised the unity within the squad:

“This is one hell of a group and the togetherness in this team is outstanding. We’re there for each other on the pitch. Even in games like this, when things get a bit uncomfortable, everyone puts their body on the line for one another. The atmosphere in the squad is really good, and the coach prepares us well.”

Head coach Ole Werner echoed his captain’s sentiments, while highlighting his side’s efficiency:

“There were a lot of things we could have done better. We made too many simple mistakes and the nervy finish was unnecessary. But we were very efficient, and that’s something we’ve been missing for large parts of the season. It’s good to have that efficiency back. You have to find a way to win games even when not everything is spot on. That’s what the team did today, and that’s what matters.”

The victory marks Leipzig’s fourth win in their last five matches, strengthening their grip on a top-four spot as they are set to end the weekend in third place. Attention now turns to next Saturday, when Borussia Mönchengladbach visit the Red Bull Arena.
