As expected, Gladbach dominated possession early on, but it was Heidenheim’s Eren Dinkçi who had the first attempt of the game. However, the hosts took the lead with their first real chance ten minutes later.

The club's youngest Bundesliga goalscorer was at it again as Diant Ramaj was unable to save Woel Mohya's powerful strike despite getting a hand to it. Jonas Föhrenbach and Patrick Mainka came close for an immediate response before the latter succeeded in his second big chance within five minutes.

The captain scored from Niklas Dorsch’s free-kick delivery to bring life into the game. Heidenheim even threatened to take the lead before the break as Nicolas made a couple of strong saves to deny Mathias Honsak and Mainka.

The visitors suffered an early setback after the restart as Hennes Behrens had to be substituted due to injury, but they still fashioned the better chances. The only surprise of them taking the lead was that it came from Marnon-Thomas Busch.

The right-back finally scored his first Bundesliga goal with a first-time hit after Marvin Pieringer's attempt blocked by Rocco Reitz, who was playing at Borussia Park for the first time since completing his impending move to RB Leipzig.

However, that lead only lasted for ten minutes. Franck Honorat's shot was deflected by Föhrenbach on its way to the net as the Frenchman scored in back-to-back home games.

Both goalkeepers made decent stops in the final ten minutes as the teams shared the spoils. Despite showing spirit in back-to-back draws, Heidenheim’s winless streak is now extended to 15 games. Meanwhile, Eugen Polanski’s side missed a golden chance to distance themselves from the drop zone.
