Former Germany internationals Stefan Effenberg and Lothar Matthäus have questioned Manuel Neuer's status as the undisputed number one of the German national team.

Effenberg and Matthäus believe it makes sense to consider whether to stick with Neuer in goal after the Bayern Munich veteran made som crucial mistakes in Germany's disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar.

"Flick must consider whether a change in goal might be appropriate. Neuer didn't look good when it comes to a few of the conceded goals, everyone saw that," Effenberg wrote in an column for t-online.de.

Speaking to Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Matthäus said:

"We have the quality. You can try out ter Stegen, Trapp or Leno in the next few games, give them the opportunity to show whether you can rely on them. Especially after the Costa Rica game, where Neuer made unusual mistakes.

"All three (Neuer, ter Stegen, Trapp) are world class. Even if 'Manu' is out, I have no worries regarding Trapp or ter Stegen."
