St. Pauli unveil Wagner, Kiezkicker also sign keeper Voll
Robert Wagner | FC St. Pauli |
Newly promoted Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli have officially confirmed the rumored signing of Germany U21 international Robert Wagner. The 20-year-old SC Freiburg professional will be loaned out for the second consecutive year by his parent club. Wagner scored four goals and registered five assists in 31 2. Bundesliga appearances whilst on loan at SpVgg Greuther Fürth last season. He also earned regular call-ups to Antonio di Salvo's DFB Juniors, making three appearances at Germany's highest youth level.
The midfielder is set to fill the gap left by Aljoscha Kemlein, who will be returning to his parent club of 1. FC Union Berlin despite efforts by the St. Pauli front office to retain him. Kiezkicker sporting director Andreas Bornemann made it clear that he even considered the more attack minded Wagner to be an upgrade of sorts in his statement accompanying the signing. A statement released by head-coach Fabian Hürzeler expressed similar sentiments.
“Robert has already gained playing experience at a high level over the past two years," Borneman's statement read, "and his skills match the profile we were looking for in central midfield.”
“I'm really looking forward to working with him," Hürzeler added, " He's very confident on the ball, actively offers himself as a passing option, and has a certain drive towards goal."
St. Pauli unveiled another signed shortly after Wagner's transfer was confirmed. Third division keeper Ben Voll will join the top flight side from 3. Liga club FC Viktoria Köln. The 23-year-old started 32 fixtures for his 3. Liga club last season, keeping five clean sheets. Voll ostensibly has been signed as the team's #3 behind Nikola Vasilj and Sascha Burchert.
