Tomas Cvancara scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time to give Gladbach a hard-fought 1-0 win over Union Berlin at the Borussia-Park on Saturday.
Referee Daniel Schlager allowed a total of eight minutes to be added on, much to the surprise and frustration of Union Berlin coach Bo Svensson.
"I have no understanding for that," said Svensson in a post-match interview.
"Eight minutes is an extreme amount of time in a half where there was no VAR intervention," he continued.
Gladbach managing director for sport Rolando Virkus admitted that he was also surprised by the length of the stoppage time, but Die Fohlen's head coach, Geardo Seoane, pointed out that both Ko Itakura and Benedict Hollerbach needed treatment in the second half.
"I think there were longer interruptions because of the injuries," said Seoane.
