Werner on Agu's second Bundesliga goal: "That's the hard work he puts in during training."
Werner noted that the manner in which Agu scored - off a cross from his right wing-back partner Mitchell Weiser - was not at all a coincidence. Both player and coach have a hunch that this season may produce something special. Agu appears on an upward trajectory

When former Germany U21 international Felix Agu scored his inaugural Bundesliga goal against Augsburg on the 16th match-day of the 2020/21 campaign, the then promising German youth international had no way of knowing that his second league tally wouldn't come a full three-and-a-half years later. It proved a strange coincidence that it ended up coming against the very same opponent.
After serving Bremen regularly in the German second division in the sub sequent season, injury and form issues precluded Agu from earning many appearances in Bremen's first season back in the top flight. Last year was a different story. Finally fit again, Agu still wasn't able to nail down a starting spot. He nevertheless did garner three assists in relief appearances during the second half of the season.
The Hanseaten were pleased enough to sign him to a contract extension this offseason. Head-coach Ole Werner's opening day starting left-wing-back has pumped his estimated market worth up to a career-high €4 million. For both Agu and his coach, the goal that opened up the scoring in the 2-2 draw with Augsburg was hopefully a signal of a new beginning.
"Sometimes one just wakes up with a good feeling," Agu - as quoted by Kicker Magazine's Tim Lüddecke - noted, "I've had several balls like that that didn't go in before. This time it did. I know [that there's competition for my position], but that pushes you to the maximum. No player should feel secure in his position."
"He can use his speed well and often pops up in those situations" Werner said of his player's tally, "That's the hard work he puts in during training sessions. He takes tons of those balls crossed onto his feet. I'm pleased that this is paying off relatively early for him. Hopefully, it will give him a tail wind."
