Newly-promoted Hamburger SV have had a tough start to the season, picking up just one point from their opening three games without scoring.

Saturday’s 5–0 defeat to Bayern Munich was another heavy blow for the North German side, but HSV sporting director Stefan Kuntz insists he remains calm and patient.

“We spent seven years in the second division. Patience doesn’t mean waiting until next week, but until April or May,” Kuntz told Sky Germany after the defeat.

“If we draw the right conclusions from the game, there’s a lot we can learn,” he added.

He went on to back head coach Merlin Polzin despite the fact that HSV fell behind 4-0 within the first half hour against the German champions.

“Merlin had the courage to play with a team that has many young players. We wanted to defend actively but didn’t manage that well in the first half. In the second half, it looked a little better.”

HSV face Heidenheim, Union Berlin and Mainz in their next three games.
