FC Augsburg’s players and their coach were still soaking in the disbelief and joy following their stunning 2‑1 win over Bayern Munich.
Robin Fellhauer summed up the mood: “We had to believe in ourselves. Nobody believed in us, so we had to do it ourselves. We wanted to play well, force a bit of luck, and then make the most of it. We can hardly believe it - it’s an incredible feeling, and it’s only just sinking in in the locker room.”
Midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj praised the team’s defensive effort, which laid the foundation for their triumph. “Defensively, we were outstanding today,” he said. “Everyone enjoyed defending - it was a joy to be part of it.”
Head coach Manuel Baum highlighted both the performance and the mentality behind the result. “An outstanding outcome, and the lads deserved it,” he said. “I was convinced the players would have to earn the belief that they could have a chance against Bayern. We wanted to create a day we will remember for years, and I think we’ve achieved that. Simply a fantastic performance from the guys, and I’m very proud.”
Baum also revealed the tactical challenges Augsburg had to overcome. “This was different from what Union Saint-Gilloise did against Bayern,” he explained. “We had to double up on the wings, especially on Olise’s side. It was brutal how many different pressing heights we had to defend against. At one point, I even thought about changing the setup, but the lads played themselves into a flow. They instinctively knew where they needed to be today.”
The voices from Augsburg’s camp underline the combination of belief, discipline, and sheer determination that fueled one of the Bundesliga’s most dramatic upsets this season.
