FC Augsburg produced one of the most dramatic upsets of the Bundesliga season, stunning a weakened and flu-hit Bayern Munich side with a late turnaround at the Allianz Arena.

The match started in surprising fashion, with Augsburg coming out aggressively and taking the game to a Bayern side disrupted by a flu outbreak and a highly unusual starting XI, including Davies at right-back. After 15 minutes, it was Augsburg who looked the more active side, testing Bayern’s unusual defensive shape.

But Bayern showed why they are still the Bavarian giants. In the 23rd minute, a perfectly delivered corner from Michael Olise found Hiroki Ito, who headed the ball into the net to give the hosts a 1‑0 lead. From there, Bayern dominated possession and created several chances, with Karl and Díaz coming close to extending the lead. Despite Augsburg’s spirited play, the opener seemed to give Bayern the confidence to assert their usual dominance, even with a makeshift lineup.

Augsburg’s resilience kept them in the game. Arthur Chaves, the new signing, prevented a dangerous header from Kane in the 56th minute, keeping the game close. Bayern appeared lucky later when the referee stopped an Augsburg counterattack in a potential overload situation, giving a free kick instead of letting play continue - a decision that could have cost them.

But then the drama really unfolded: In the 77th minute, Augsburg’s persistence paid off - a corner from Kömür found Chaves, who headed home to level the score at 1‑1. The Bundesliga world was left in shock just minutes later when Massengo produced a sublime counter in Bayern’s half and finished clinically to give Augsburg the lead in the 81st minute. The visitors combined beautifully in the box, finishing with precision to stun the Allianz Arena crowd.

Bayern had one last chance: in the dying seconds, Olise hit the crossbar, leaving the hosts helpless as Augsburg celebrated a remarkable victory. The defeat is Bayern’s first in the Bundesliga since March 8, 2025, and once again, Augsburg prove themselves to be the ultimate “Bayern killers.”
