Following Eintracht Frankfurt’s disappointing defeat to Mainz 05, head coach Albert Rieira struck a determined yet critical tone, insisting his side’s struggles are understood - and fixable.
Rieira: “I have to support my players”
Despite the setback, Rieira made it clear that his role is to stand firmly behind his squad during a difficult phase.
“I have to be there to support my players,” he said post-match, emphasizing unity within the team.
At the same time, he did not shy away from acknowledging the disappointment: “You cannot be happy with today. Nobody can.”
Clear problems - and clear responsibility
Rieira pointed directly to Frankfurt’s defensive shortcomings as a key factor in the defeat.
“We concede the goals and far too many chances,” he admitted. “We have to do better in defending.”
While avoiding public tactical breakdowns, he underlined that the details will be addressed internally:
“I cannot tell you everything in detail - that’s something for my players.”
“If I don’t know the problem, I’ll step down”
In a striking show of accountability, Rieira made a bold declaration about his position:
“If I ever don’t know the problem, I will step down immediately.”
However, he quickly reassured that this is not the case: “We know the issues - and we will solve them.”
Beyond defensive concerns, the Frankfurt coach highlighted another area for improvement: “We’ve also got to work on our rotations. We are too predictable and react too late to changes from the opponent.”
The comment suggests tactical adjustments could be on the way as Frankfurt look to regain consistency.
With pressure mounting after another setback, Rieira’s message was clear: the problems are identified, and solutions are in progress.
Now, Eintracht Frankfurt must prove it on the pitch.
