FC Bayern scored three times in the space of seven minutes to cruise to a dominant 4-0 win over Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday, extending their lead at the top to 12 points while edging closer to a historic scoring milestone.
Bayern have now netted 97 league goals this season - just four shy of equalling the club’s all-time Bundesliga record set during the 1971/72 campaign.
“We will get the record, but the priority for me is something else,” Kompany told reporters post-match. “I’m not someone who likes talking about records. I’m not too interested in that. Your playing style should not change just because the season is coming to an end.
“We must never forget what our strengths are and continue to bring them onto the pitch, regardless of the opponent. We want to keep getting better.”
Kompany also reserved special praise for Serge Gnabry, who netted a brace to move onto 99 Bundesliga goals - just one shy of a century, a milestone reached by only a select group of players.
“He’s just as good as our other attackers,” Kompany said. “Honestly, I always like to speak positively about Serge, even more than the others. He’s had spells where injuries have disrupted his rhythm, and that may have affected his consistency at times.
“But overall, he has performed for us this season - centrally, on the left, and sometimes on the right. He’s a very important player for us, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.”
The Bayern boss also provided an update on Aleksandar Pavlović, who missed the match with a hip issue and remains a doubt ahead of the upcoming international break.
“I’ll speak to Julian again,” Kompany said, referring to Julian Nagelsmann. “We’re always in close contact. There’s no real difference between what the national team wants and what we want. They have two friendlies and want to keep the players fit for the World Cup - that’s our goal as well.
“We’ll speak with the doctors and then make the right decision.”
Bayern head into the international break on an eight-match unbeaten run in the league and will look to maintain that momentum when they return to action, with a trip to Freiburg followed by a high-profile clash against Real Madrid on the horizon.
