Former Bundesliga striker Dickson Abiyama signed for Rot-Weiss Essen on a permanent basis from Kaiserslautern. Abiyama scored six goals and assisted four in only 14 3. Liga appearances in the second half of the season.

However, Essen failed to get promoted to 2. Bundesliga after a narrow defeat to Abiyama’s former club Greuther Fürth in the playoff. The Nigerian signed a two-year contract, with the club having an option to extend for the third season.

Abiyama helped Fürth to a Bundesliga promotion in 2021, but he was scoreless in 24 German top-flight games as the Bavarians immediately got relegated. He also went scoreless in 30 appearances for Kaiserslautern, although he was productive in 3. Liga with loan deals at 1860 Munich and Essen.
