Concrete supports in a section of the stands adjacent to the Ostkurve or East Stand at Bremen's Weserstadion have fractured.
This was first reported by regional news program ‘Buten un Binnen’ followed by Sky Germany later this afternoon.
Initially, there was no information regarding the cause of the damage, but the club has since issued a statement on its website:
“An incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon during the modernization of the Weserstadion,” said Hans-Jörg Otto, managing director of Bremer Weserstadion GmbH.
"A load-bearing column was accidentally damaged during renovation work in a section of the VIP area where window panes were being removed.
"This resulted in a partial collapse of the stand in the upper tier of Block 53. No one was injured in the incident. There is no risk of collapse for the other sections of the stands.
“We are currently analyzing the situation and the damage incurred, and we hope to be able to restore the stand as quickly as possible”.
