At the age of just 17, Wael Mohya is already playing an important role for Borussia Mönchengladbach and was most recently instrumental in Friday's 3-2 win over VfB Stuttgart, scoring a goal and providing an assist to help his side secure their first Bundesliga victory of the season.
Gladbach are naturally delighted with their academy graduate and will be keen to benefit from his talents for as long as possible. However, sporting director Rouven Schröder is aware that the club will inevitably have to part ways with the highly-rated midfielder sooner or later.
“He handles being Borussia's great hope very well. He has been brought up incredibly well, comes from a wonderful family, and of course, we keep an eye on how he deals with the attention. We have no concerns about that. He is the best role model for those coming through behind him, showing them how not to get carried away,” Schröder said on the Sport1 programme “Doppelpass”.
“We are in contact with him, his parents and his agency. Wael feels completely at home and is, so to speak, a young Foal. But one thing is also clear: he won't play for Borussia Mönchengladbach his entire life. You can't avoid the need to generate transfer profits. That's not always something fans want to hear.”
The technically gifted attacking midfielder made his professional debut in the DFB-Pokal around a year ago. At 16 years, nine months and 28 days, he became the youngest player ever to feature for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
He also holds the club records for the youngest Bundesliga debutant, youngest Bundesliga goalscorer and youngest player to start a match.
