In the final fixture of Matchday 1, Borussia Mönchengladbach were held to a goalless draw by newly-promoted Hamburger SV, who played their first Bundesliga game since 2018.

The hosts created the first real chance just before the half-hour mark, when Franck Honorat was denied by the a fine save from Daniel Heuer Fernandes.

Haris Tabakovic then came close on the stroke of half-time, glancing Robin Hack’s precise cross narrowly wide with his head.

Gladbach continued to press for the opener after the restart, but struggled to break down a disciplined HSV defence.

The visitors grew into the game and registered their first effort on target in the 68th minute, forcing Moritz Nicolas into a solid save.

HSV thought they had scored the winner late on through William Mikelbrencis, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

In the end, both sides had to settle for a point in a tightly contested draw.
