Borussia Dortmund’s winger Mathis Albert scored his first international goal in the United States' 4-2 friendly win over Chile. The South Carolina-native sealed the win in injury-time as he broke ex-BVB star Christian Pulisic's previous record as the youngest USMNT goalscorer.
While the headlines were on Cavan Sullivan, who turned 17 on Monday, Albert now holds the scoring record as he came off the bench to make history at the age of 17 years and 4 months. Bayer Leverkusen’s Malik Tillman also featured as a second-half substitute in a game that ended with a scuffle.
USMNT’s Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino hailed Albert after his debut performance in the 4-1 win over Peru before he topped that with his first goal against another opponents from CONMEBOL. They will now face neighbours Mexico and Canada before the end of the extended international break.
Albert made his Bundesliga debut as a late substitute in the 4-0 win over Freiburg in last season's penultimate home game. After his strong pre-season performances, Niko Kovac played the left winger for the entire 90 minutes in the DFB-Pokal opener against HEBC Hamburg.
