Borussia Mönchengladbach climbed to ninth with a fourth win in five league games. Danny da Costa’s own-goal was the deciding moment as Gladbach extended their lead over the relegation zone. It was also a return to winning ways for the visitors after exiting the cup at home against St. Pauli.
“We defended almost everything across the 90 minutes,” said Eugen Polanski in his post-match interview. Back in his playing days, Gladbach’s coach spent four seasons in Mainz.
“The first half was clearly ours. We controlled the game for long spells, and we created several chances. However, the goal we scored was unfortunately ruled out,” added the 39-year-old regarding Maxim Leitsch’s own-goal, which was cancelled for a handball on the line by Yannik Engelhardt.
“After the break, we knew we’d have to dig deep, and that’s exactly what we did. In the end, a set-piece decided it, and we’ll happily take it. It was an outstanding support from around 5,000 traveling fans. If we bring that energy onto the pitch, we can compete with anyone.”
Gladbach will entertain Wolfsburg at Borussia-Park on matchday 14 before ending the year away at Borussia Dortmund.
