Having played as a right-back for Germany under Julian Nagelsmann, captain Joshua Kimmich will return to his familiar central midfield role under new head coach Jürgen Klopp.

Klopp confirmed this on Thursday after announcing two squads consisting of a total of 44 players for the upcoming four UEFA Nations League games.

“Of course, a player with his experience, at his age, has to lead from the front. But we have to adapt to a new way of playing football. We have tactical issues to work on, including how we will work without the ball,” Klopp said.

“I have no doubt that he will fulfil his potential. And yes, we see him as a midfielder. We didn’t have a single conversation in which we talked about him as a right-back.”

Kimmich made his Germany debut in 2016 and has since gone on to score 10 goals and provide 31 assists in 114 appearances.
