Edin Terzić has not managed a club since leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024. That could be about to change. The 43-year-old may be in line to replace Ernesto Valverde as manager of Athletic Club, according to José Manuel Monje of Onda Vasca.

It was confirmed on Friday that Valverde would leave when his contract expires this summer after four successful years in Bilbao. The Basque club now needs a replacement, and Monje reported that Terzić is a target and that there has been contact.

Athletic Club's famous transfer policy means that they cannot sign players born outside of the Basque region or without Basque roots. As a result, there's a high emphasis on developing younger players, which makes Terzić an interesting option.

Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, for instance, played a prominent role in some of Terzić's Dortmund sides before eventually leaving for significant transfer fees.

Borussia Dortmund reached a Champions League final under Terzić in 2024, although they ultimately lost 2-0 to Real Madrid. The 2023 Bundesliga was lost in similarly painful circumstances, as Dortmund's draw with Mainz on the final day gifted Bayern Munich the title.

Terzić did, however, win the 2021 DFB Pokal with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig.

Since leaving Dortmund, Terzić has reportedly turned down opportunities with Real Sociedad, AS Monaco, and Everton. Real Sociedad, who are fierce local rivals with Athletic Club, eventually hired former Hoffenheim and Stuttgart manager Pellegrino Matarazzo.
