Jamie Carragher makes bold Ballon d’Or claim about Harry Kane

Jamie Carragher has delivered a striking verdict on the Ballon d’Or debate, stating that Harry Kane deserves to win the award based on his performances over the past 12 months - while admitting it is unlikely due to England’s limited prospects on the international stage.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has made a strong case for Harry Kane to be crowned Ballon d’Or winner, arguing that the striker’s performances over the past year have been worthy of football’s most prestigious individual prize.

Speaking to TeleFootball, Carragher suggested that Kane has done enough at club and international level to be considered the standout player of the last 12 months.

“Based on the past 12 months, Harry Kane should win the Ballon d’Or,” Carragher said.

However, the former Liverpool defender also admitted that the England captain’s chances are significantly weakened by the broader context of international tournaments, particularly in a World Cup year.

“Unfortunately, he probably won’t because in a World Cup year it is bound to go to the star player of the winning nation,” he added.

Carragher also expressed doubts over England’s ability to mount a serious challenge on the world stage, suggesting recent performances do not support optimism around a potential tournament triumph.

“Much as I want to believe England can still win it, there is nothing to support that opinion, especially after recent performances,” he concluded.

Kane, who has consistently delivered at the highest level for both club and country, remains one of the leading contenders in the individual awards conversation. However, as Carragher points out, team success on the global stage could ultimately prove decisive in the Ballon d’Or race.
