On a busy Saturday for Bundesliga clubs, Mainz 05 and Union Berlin played against Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Ipswich Town, respectively. Urs Fischer’s side beat the Europa League participants, while Union Berlin suffered a home defeat to the newly-promoted club.

Sheraldo Becker and William Bøving scored the goals for the 05ers against Marco Rose’s team at Mewa Arena. Last season’s Conference League participants ended the pre-season without defeat as they followed their 4-0 win over Liam Rosenior’s Paris FC with another excellent result against the club that finished last season with a historic 18-game unbeaten run.

Meanwhile, Union Berlin played against Ipswich City in front of over 12,000 fans at Försterei. Summer signing Zeno Van Den Bosch put the hosts in front inside the first ten minutes, but the Premier League newcomers produced a comeback performance to win 4-2. Josip Juranovic scored Union Berlin’s second goal after the restart.

Mainz will face newly-promoted Paderborn when Bundesliga start in two weeks, while Union Berlin host Eintracht Frankfurt, who suffered a 7-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday. All four teams will start their season next week with the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
