Mainz vs. Dortmund preview: Can the 05ers get a result?

In their push to avoid relegation, Mainz host Champions League finalists Dortmund in the topspiel on Matchday 33.

Mainz

Mainz are on 29 points and currently sit in the relegation playoff spot. Out of all the sides in the relegation battle, they likely have the most difficult remaining schedule against Dortmund and in-form Wolfsburg.

With their large goal-difference advantage over Köln, they only need one more point to avoid an immediate drop to the second division. The vibe is good in the Rhenish Hesse with the players happy about playing for Bo Henriksen, who could stay in charge for next season.

Henriksen commented, "We don't need to be looking at any permutations, we just need to win. - I realized straight away how special home games here are in Mainz. They can make anything possible.”

Karim Onisiwo is questionable, while Phillipp Mwene is still suspended.

Dortmund

BVB are riding high after their thrilling escape against PSG to improbably advance into the Champions League final. It’s a great accomplishment for the black and yellow, who have struggled at times in league play this year.

There isn’t much left to play for in the Bundesliga for a club that have already secured CL football for next season. Dortmund could jump Leipzig to secure 4th in the table, but Edin Terzic will likely still make several changes to the lineup this weekend for his tired side.

On Friday, Terzic said, "We want to climb one place up in the Bundesliga. There is still a lot at stake for many teams. We want to make an impact through a good performance and look after ourselves."
