According to BILD, the 22-year-old went down after attempting a shot during the club's training camp in Wörgl, Austria, clutching the left side of his groin before requiring treatment from the medical staff.
Nebel was taken to the side of the pitch for further assessment before leaving the session with only a slight limp. Mainz have yet to determine the full extent of the problem, with additional tests set to be carried out.
The attacking midfielder had featured in every training session throughout pre-season until Tuesday's setback, making the injury a concern just weeks before the start of the new Bundesliga campaign.
It remains to be seen whether Nebel's withdrawal was merely precautionary or whether he has suffered a more significant adductor injury.
