Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that he sees Leon Goretzka as not only an option for the double pivot, but also as a candidate for the central attacking midfield role in his 4-2-3-1 system.

“Absolutely, that’s definitely an option. He has also scored a few goals in training and is making a good impression,” Nagelsmann said at a press conference on Saturday.

With Germany heading to the World Cup without a traditional No. 9, Goretzka is among the players who could chip in with goals.

“In the end, the question is: do we have a classic striker who can guarantee us seven, eight, nine goals at the World Cup – or do we spread the goals across several shoulders like we did at the Euros? We have many players who can score three or four goals in the tournament and also provide assists,” Nagelsmann said.

“Our idea is to share goals and assists among several players, but if there is someone who can score seven or eight goals, they are welcome to do so.”

Germany face Finland on Sunday in the first of two World Cup warm-up friendlies.
