It was heartbreak for the hosts, whose remarkable late-season fight against the drop ultimately fell just short at the final hurdle. Goals from Philipp Tietz and Nadiem Amiri secured all three points for Mainz and confirmed Heidenheim’s return to the second tier.
Mainz made the brighter start and were rewarded with the perfect opening just seven minutes in. Youngster Kacper Potulski glided past several Heidenheim defenders down the left before driving into the box and cutting the ball back from the byline. His cross eventually found Tietz unmarked at the back post, and with Patrick Mainka caught ball-watching, the striker nodded into an empty net to hand the visitors an early lead.
Heidenheim began to grow into the contest around the midway point of the first half, with Eren Dinkçi forcing Daniel Batz into action for the first time. Their best chance arrived on the half-hour mark when a clever through ball released Jan Schöppner, who squared for Marvin Pieringer inside the box. However, from only a few yards out, Pieringer somehow smashed his effort against the crossbar to the disbelief of the home crowd.
Five minutes later, the woodwork came to Heidenheim’s rescue instead. More hesitant defending allowed Amiri to weave his way into the penalty area before firing from a tight angle, only for the post to deny the Mainz midfielder with Frank Feller beaten.
But Mainz did double their advantage two minutes before the interval. Sheraldo Becker led the counterattack before finding Tietz, who unselfishly laid the ball into the path of Amiri. The midfielder kept his composure, waiting for Feller to commit before calmly sidestepping the goalkeeper and slotting home his 12th goal of the campaign to leave Heidenheim staring relegation in the face at half-time.
Knowing only a dramatic turnaround would preserve their Bundesliga status, Heidenheim emerged after the break with renewed urgency and pinned Mainz back for long spells. Once again, though, the crossbar denied them on 53 minutes as Schöppner connected with a high delivery into the area, only to see his effort cannon away to further frustration from the home supporters.
The hosts continued to dominate possession throughout the second half but lacked the cutting edge required in the final third. Substitute Stefan Schimmer blazed over on 67 minutes, and with news filtering through that Wolfsburg were leading in Hamburg, the sense of inevitability around the stadium only grew stronger.
To their credit, neither the team nor the supporters gave up. Heidenheim continued to pour forward, roared on by an increasingly emotional atmosphere inside the Voith-Arena. They thought they had finally found a lifeline when Budu Zivzivadze met a close-range header inside the final ten minutes, but Batz produced another crucial save to preserve Mainz’s clean sheet.
Ultimately, time ran out for Heidenheim. Despite a spirited second-half display and relentless pressure, they were unable to find the breakthrough they desperately needed, and the final whistle confirmed their relegation from the Bundesliga after three memorable seasons in the top flight.
