Yannik Engelhardt will return to the German topflight ahead of the upcoming season, but this time with SC Freiburg.

After the Como 1907 midfielder spent last season on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Breisgauers have now secured the services.

The 25-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the side from the Black Forest who had to fend off competition to get his signature.

Club Brugge were also in the running for Engelhardt, but a transfer fee believed to be around €7million proved enough for Freiburg.

“Yannik made a very strong impression during his first stint at SC. He can read the game and is technically very good," said sporting director Klemens Hartenbach.

At his last two clubs, his structural qualities were particularly valued, which now need to be combined with his offensive capabilities.”
