Hertha victory places two more on injured reserve, Piatek nears return

Hertha BSC's second win of the season came at the cost of two more injuries. On Saturday, the club confirmed furnished updates on Myziane Maolida and captain Dedryck Boyata.

Meanwhile, head-coach Pal Dardai did have some good news to report on the potential return of one of his strikers.

Even before Germany's "alte Dame" competed their second three-point haul of the season of Friday evening, Pal Dardai & Co had to contend with a harsh loss. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that center-halve Jordan Torunarigha would miss 4-6 weeks with a "serious muscle injury". Defender Lukas Klünter, another casualty from last Sunday's win over Bochum, also underwent shoulder surgery and will be out indefinitely.

Another center back went down early on Friday night. Captain Dedryck Boyata found himself unable to continue. For the second consecutive match, 17-year-old Linus Gechter had to come on in emergency relief. Newly acquired attacker Myziane Maolida also had to be subbed off. Prospects for both players in next round's fixture against Leipzig appear bleak.

Hertha trainer Pal Dardai, noting that the other defenders Marvin Plattenhardt and son Marton Dardai are also experiencing fitness issues as they return from their own injuries, indicated that several youth academy players will be joining training over the course of the next week.

Amid this mounting list of bad news, the Charlottenburgers look to have a key member of the attack back next week. According to Dardai, Polish striker  Krzysztof Piatek may well be available off the bench next week. It's been a long rehab process since the 25-year-old "Pistolero" fractured his ankle last May, but the comeback is at long last in sight.

"It looks very good," Dardai said on Saturday, "the [training] loads placed on him in the last two weeks have him league ready. Of course, we have to be careful not to break anything, but we can slowly work him in as as a sub. He's scored the most goals for us as a sub, so why shouldn't he come on and score against Leipzig?"
