Official: Friedrich switches to Gladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach officially confirmed the signing of Union Berlin defender Marvin Friedrich early on Tuesday evening.
Shortly after rumors about the move surfaced, the transfer with immediate effect of defender Marvin Friedrich from 1. FC Union was confirmed on Tuesday evening. The 26-year-old Kassel native departs the country's capital after having made 113 competitive appearances with "die Eisernen" over the course of five seasons.

"The last few years [here at Union] were indescribable and won't soon be forgotten," Friedrich, who sat on an expiring contract, noted in a statement.

FCU sporting director Oliver Ruhnert also released a statement, acknowledging that Friedrich's move was "a great loss in both sporting and personal terms.

In luring Friedrich over to Nordrhein-Westfalen, BMG sporting director Max Eberl has presumably found his replacement for the soon to depart Matthias Ginter. Union themselves did proactively procure a replacement for Friedrich in the form of SC Freiburg's Dominique Heintz.

"We are very pleased to have succeeded in bringing an experienced central defender to Borussia," Eberl noted at Friedrich's introduction, "Marvin has evolved into one of the best German defenders in the league."

Friedrich inked a deal through 2026.
