Former Bayern München and Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath was appointed new Hertha BSC coach yesterday, replacing Tayfun Korkut on a deal until the end of the season.

Magath takes over a team in disarray, sitting 17th in the Bundesliga after five straight losses.

At his first press conference as Hertha coach today, the 68-year-old coaching veteran shared his thoughts on the tough task ahead of him.

"We all need to work together to get out of this difficult situation - it's not about myself or Fredi, only Hertha BSC. Achieving our goal will only happen when we are fully concentrated on the task and focus on the essentials," Magath told reporters.

"I need to meet the guys first; I need to get a sense of them. Watching the match on Saturday, I saw that the players had the will to win, but lacked coordination. The first chance I get will be against Hoffenheim - our focus is fully on that.

"From the start, we only talked about these final eight Bundesliga games and keeping the club up. I'm not looking at anything else - I'll put everything I have into ending this winless run and staying in this division."

Known for being a disciplinarian, Magath also commented on his coaching style:

"It's always about training the players as best as we can and preparing them for matches. Discipline is an equally-important aspect of sport, especially in team sport. That's something which I've had to learn when I was a player, and now I'm asking my players here at Hertha BSC to be disciplined.

"I'm not doing it for me. My most treasured players will be those who make a great effort to help out in this club's quest to stay in the Bundesliga."
