Werder Bremen put on a show and destroy Gladbach

Aggressive Werder Bremen thrilled their supporters at the Weserstadion with a 5-1 win over Gladbach to shockingly move ahead of Daniel Farke's side in the table on Matchday 8.
Ole Werner worked his magic once again, as Werder's efficient offensive performance earned the club a stunning 5-1 victory. Niclas Füllkrug impressed with a brace and Marvin Ducksch finally got a top flight goal in a memorable first-half performance.

Werder pressed high, looking confident to begin the game and got on the board quickly at the five minute mark. Füllkrug finished things off to grab his 6th goal of the season, which ramped up the home crowd. Werder were just getting started.

Ducksch scored after Romano Schmid's 8th minute run to end his scoring drought in the first division. Werder were absolutely flying, showing no signs of a newly-promoted side. Then, Füllkrug was back for more.

Füllkrug slotted home Ducksch's pass after a poor Ramy Bensebaini header to give Werder a 3-0 lead before the quarter hour mark. It was simply unbelievable. Gladbach must've been reminiscing back to their nightmarish 6-0 defeat against Freiburg last season when all six goals came in the first half.

Ducksch had several sublime chances to claim a brace of his own, but Werder nonetheless extended their advantage yet again. After a Werder cross, Bensebaini scored an own-goal to lend the newly-promoted club a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.

Daniel Farke didn't make any changes to begin the second period, but Gladbach began to look more organized. Mitchell Weiser hit the post from a header 15 minutes into the half, as Werder were hungry for more.

Marcus Thuram converted Lars Stindl's through-ball to finally get Gladbach on the board in the 63rd minute. Gladbach grew in confidence, but Weiser's left-footed 73rd minute finish earned Werder their 5th to completely end any remaining Gladbach hopes.

Werder travel to Hoffenheim on Matchday 9, while Gladbach face Köln at home next weekend.
