Sky Germany reports that, some three seasons after playing in the top flight with Fortuna Düsseldorf, Polish striker Dawid Kownacki might get picked up by a top division side after the current campaign concludes.

Twenty-five-year-old Düsseldorf striker Dawid Kownacki has been experiencing something of a resurgence this season, netting seven goals and eight assists in 19 appearances across all competitions for the F95 thus far. In what was some fairly big 2. Bundesliga news recently, the seven-times-capped Polish international announced that he would not renew his expiring contract with the Flingernaner and try his luck as a free agent this summer.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, while actually getting Kownacki's assist total wrong, reports that Eintracht Frankfurt and FSV Mainz 05 are already angling for the player's services. The rumor does make logical sense in that both Frankfurt (likely to lose Rafael Santos Borré) and Mainz (possibly having to cope with Jonathan Burkardt's departure) will want to snap up at least one striker on a free this offseason.

Once considered a very hot commodity after scoring six Serie A goals early in his career, Kownacki joined Düsseldorf first on loan and then permanently on a €6.75 transfer from Sampdoria Genoa. He has four Bundesliga goals to his credit in 30 top-tier appearances during two seasons spent playing for the NRW club in the Bundesliga.

Following Düsseldorf's relegation at the end of the 2019/20 season, he's cobbled together two reasonably successful seasons in the 2. Bundesliga and enjoyed some success out on loan to Lech Poznan in his native Poland during the latter half of the 2021/22 season. Plettenberg notes that other unspecified Bundesliga clubs are also interested in him.
